Food gathering and agriculture are as old as creation. Early man’s survival was gathering of food and fruits for the households. Food is an essential component that supports the existence of mankind. Food must be available, individual must have access to sufficient food, and availability must be stable and satisfactory in quality and reliable. While recognizing the diversity that exist among countries, villages, household and household members. It is clear that there is food insecurity in Africa. Food is an important part of the widespread poverty prevailing in urban and rural communities in developing countries Nigeria inclusive. Africa is noted as the only continent where global food supply per capita has declined over 30 years, problem of food security is generally not only related to shortages but distribution of inadequate and insecure food availability(Barnett and Grellier 2003).
Food safety for individual is expressed through access to nutritious food quantity sufficient for healthy and active life (Drimic and Mullins 2006). Therefore, food security requires several components if not balanced make household vulnerable to food insecurity. Moreover, norms, tradition and cultural taboos define preference for food and allocation within the household determines the use of foodstuff. It is important to note that food security is better understood in the context of political, state institutions, market fluctuation and natural environment.
Today, there are various governmental, non governmental and international agencies supporting food security in Nigeria especially in the rural areas where about 70% of the population live. Among the agencies are National Programme on Food Security (NPFS), National Strategic Reserve and Sakakawa Project to mention few.
